Setting Sail Towards Confidence and Independence
Easy access to the Noosa River is not just a welcome convenience for a group of Sunshine Coast locals. It means so much more than that.
If you have ever strolled along the Noosa River in Noosaville, you might have spotted sails gliding across the water.
These boats belong to participants from the Wallace Park Learning and Lifestyle hub, who have embraced their love for sailing.
Thanks to a partnership with local business, Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club, Jason, Zak and their fellow participants are making waves – building skills, confidence and independence along the way.
A Weekly Adventure to Remember
Every Thursday, Jason and Zak gear up for Sailability, their favourite activity.
The ocean breeze, the thrill of steering the 12-foot Vagabond dinghies and the splash of the waves make this a highlight of their week.
“I am going on the red boat, and I am going to have a lovely, lovely day – and get wet,” Jason said.
Brimming with excitement, Zak added: “I am going to have the best day ever.”
Under the guidance of qualified sailing instructors, the participants are not only learning how to handle the ropes but discovering their own potential.
Building Skills, Confidence and Joy
Sailing offers much more than just a day out on the water. It is a chance for people like Jason and Zak to develop important life skills.
Through teamwork, they learn to communicate and collaborate.
By navigating the boats, they improve their problem-solving abilities.
And with every session, they gain confidence in themselves.
“Activities like sailing help people with disability experience independence and achieve their goals,” Wallace Park Learning and Lifestyle hub Site Manager, Julie Elford, said.
“It is all about supporting each person to live their best lives.”
The Journey Towards Independence
Over the coming months, Jason, Zak and their peers will work on mastering their sailing skills.
With each trip, they grow more comfortable steering the boats and understanding the wind and water.
The program is set to conclude with a celebratory regatta event where participants can showcase their new abilities and enjoy a well-earned barbecue with friends and supporters.
These moments on the water are more than just fun – they are life-changing.
They provide a sense of belonging, achievement and joy, proving that everyone deserves the chance to pursue their passions.
Community Support Makes It Possible
At Endeavour Foundation, we understand the importance of fostering strong community partnerships, as they are crucial to enabling clients’ dreams to become reality.
By giving people with disability opportunities to explore what they love, they are supported to build lives filled with independence, confidence and happiness.
For Jason and Zak, sailing is just the beginning.
With each trip out on the water, they are proving that every wave they ride takes them closer to their dreams.
