3 Inspiring Supported Independent Living Success Stories
If Supported Independent Living sounds like the right fit for you, these success stories provide the ideal motivation to make it happen.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) looks different for everyone.
For some, it means a focus on learning new skills or hobbies; for others, it is about building confidence to connect with their community.
Three people we support – Andrew, Roslyn and Lynne – demonstrate just how personal the SIL journey can be.
Although the trio were long-time housemates at Forrest Beach, near Ingham, before Andrew moved to Gympie, they have always been determined to live life their way.
Their unique and varying stories show how SIL can help you to create the life you want to live.
We are here to support you on your journey.
1. Andrew Takes Control of His Home Life
Andrew has enjoyed Endeavour Foundation SIL supports since 1994, and his path to greater independence has been inspiring.
Over the years, he has taken on more responsibilities at home, learning new skills that help him feel in control of his daily life.
Andrew assists with laundry, helps staff with shopping and confidently uses the television remote control, giving him the freedom to enjoy his favourite shows.
He also has a passion for cooking, especially when sausages are on the menu.
As a keen home cook, Andrew helps plan meals for each month, goes grocery shopping with his housemates and is always ready to take charge of the barbecue.
Creativity in Action
Andrew’s skills extend beyond the kitchen.
He is becoming proficient at vacuuming and even teaches his Support Workers the best techniques.
“I love that Andrew is showing staff how to vacuum now too,” says Support Worker, Erica.
Also, Andrew has a creative side.
He spends hours making colourful mats from fabric, which he carefully cuts, threads and ties.
Once complete, Andrew sells them – a true entrepreneur.
His independence is growing each day, and his support network is incredibly proud of the progress he has made.
2. Roslyn Is Living Life to the Fullest
Roslyn, who recently celebrated her 70th birthday, has been part of the Endeavour Foundation community for more than five decades.
She first joined her local Learning and Lifestyle Hub in 1973 and later moved into an Endeavour Foundation home with SIL supports in 1983.
Since then, Roslyn has thrived, proving that independence has no age limit.
Roslyn takes great pride in her daily routines.
She sets the dinner table each night, does her washing, helps with grocery shopping and completes odd jobs around the house.
Staying Active and Social
But life is not all about chores – Roslyn is also incredibly active in her community.
She enjoys swimming, equine therapy, playing bocce and catching up with friends for lunch.
Roslyn’s energy and enthusiasm inspire everyone around her.
With so many achievements behind her and plenty more ahead, Roslyn continues to show what is possible with the necessary supports and a good dose of determination.
3. Lynne’s Bond with Horses Builds Confidence
Lynne has been receiving SIL supports since 1996, paving the way for a more independent lifestyle.
In mid-2024, her SIL journey led to a life-changing opportunity.
We initiated an equine therapy session for Lynne and her housemates, and the trial transformed Lynne’s life.
She quickly fell in love with the ponies and has been attending regular sessions ever since.
Each fortnight, Lynne makes the 80-kilometre trip from her home to the farm, where she grooms the ponies, leads them around and takes part in fun motor skills activities like tossing hoops and playing card games.
Growing in Confidence
This experience has greatly enhanced Lynne’s confidence and independence.
Her support team have noticed a remarkable difference in Lynne. She is more physically active and willing to embrace new experiences.
“When I first met Lynne, it was hard to motivate her to try new activities,” one of her Support Workers said.
“But since starting equine therapy and even going to the gym, she has become so much more active and engaged.”
With her love for horses and a newfound sense of adventure, Lynne is living life to the fullest.
Thriving with the Right Supports
Andrew, Roslyn and Lynne’s stories highlight the power of SIL and the exciting opportunities it can create.
With the necessary supports, the trio are thriving in their own ways.
