Employment Success: Supporting Matt to Achieve Independence
Matt was looking for a change of employers and made the switch to Endeavour Foundation. The move really paid off.
In the bustling world of construction, Matt found himself at a crossroads during his late teenage years.
His workplace was built on self-reliance and toughness, which left Matt feeling undervalued and unfulfilled.
He knew he wanted to work in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Matt began his search for a new workplace, which is when he came across Endeavour Foundation’s employment pathways.
Choosing to work with Endeavour Foundation transformed his professional and personal life.
Matt soon found a role at our Burleigh Heads Business Solutions where he discovered a new way of working.
Unlike his previous job in construction, where support was limited, Matt felt part of a team. In fact, he has created lasting friendships with his workmates.
Building Skills and Confidence
During his ten years in his role , Matt excelled in packaging and assembly while actively pursuing further qualifications.
This included forming a study group with co-workers, so they could collectively achieve certifications in forklift operation and first aid.
Matt even completed a 4WD training course, becoming the first Endeavour Foundation supported employee to participate in the Great Endeavour Rally as a driver.
With each achievement, Matt’s interpersonal skills, confidence and independence continued to reach new heights.
This renewed his interest in Mainstream Employment – a pathway Matt’s team gave their full support to.
Three years ago, Matt was offered the opportunity to work once a week at his local recycling centre.
Under the mentorship of his Shift Supervisor, Matt familiarised himself with the waste facility, learnt the ropes and formed meaningful relationships with his coworkers.
Transitioning to Mainstream Success
When a Recycling Assistant position became available at the waste facility last year, Matt’s support team at Burleigh Heads Business Solutions encouraged him to apply and supported him through the recruitment process.
“While I loved working at Burleigh Heads [Business Solutions], and it gave me a good safety net, I eventually felt ready to step out on my own,” Matt said.
“I am excited to keep learning and growing.”
Matt transitioned into Mainstream Employment seamlessly, thanks to his previous work experience and established relationships at the recycling centre.
Matt is thriving and has embraced the challenges of working in a customer-facing position – the first in his career.
“Do not let challenges scare you because they are what helps you to grow.” Matt said.
“If you have a goal in mind, go for it.
“You can do so many great things when you have a good team or people around you to back you up.”
