Supported Employment Sparks Brendan’s Bright Future

Looking to kickstart your career? Take inspiration from Brendan, who is making giant leaps and bounds in his employment journey.

Brendan is moving up in the world.

The 19-year-old has just started a new role as a Trades Assistant at AEP Advanced Engineering in Townsville.

This smooth transition to Mainstream Employment was made possible through his time as a Supported Employee at our Townsville – Business Solutions.

Brendan started working with us in 2022 and was employed across various areas. These included document destruction, e-waste and recycling solutions and metal fabrication with BlueScope Steel.

With guidance from his employment coaches, Grace and Christine, Brendan gained valuable skills and confidence.

His determination and love of hands-on work, particularly metalwork and woodwork, were obvious from the beginning.

“I like working with my hands and using my maths skills,” Brendan said.

“Cutting metal and measuring it in the BlueScope area was my favourite.”

Support with Impact

Supported Employment with Endeavour Foundation provided Brendan with the ideal environment to develop his skills and prepare for Mainstream Employment.

Brendan’s employment coaches were always there to support him, whether helping him learn new tasks or addressing workplace challenges.

“They helped me a lot,” Brendan said.

“If I had an issue, I would talk to Grace or Christine. They showed me new things and supported me to improve.”

For Brendan, having understanding and patient mentors made all the difference.

When busy environments felt overwhelming, his coaches helped him find quieter spaces to recharge.

Partnership Opens Doors

During a tour at one of the site’s open days, AEP’s Director recognised Brendan’s potential and saw how his skills aligned with their work.

After a successful interview, Brendan was offered the role of Trades Assistant.

Now, Brendan works Monday to Thursday, contributing to such tasks as guiding vehicles, handling deliveries and recycling materials.

His enthusiasm for learning and supporting others shines through.

“I like helping people when they need it,” Brendan said.

“If someone asks nicely, I am happy to help.”

Celebrating Success

Brendan’s excitement about his new job was contagious.

“When I got the job, I called to tell everyone straight away!” he said.

We celebrated Brendan’s achievement with a farewell morning tea, where he proudly shared his news.

Brendan now wears his AEP uniform with pride.

“I am one of the ‘orange shirts’ now,” he said, grinning, as he showed off his new work gear.

Eyes on the Ultimate Goal

Brendan’s long-term dream is to become a welder. Working at AEP is a significant step towards that goal.

“I want to do a welding apprenticeship, eventually,” he said.

For now, Brendan is enjoying the variety of tasks in his current role and building his skills further.

For people with disability considering employment, Brendan offers sound advice.

“Try your best, and learn as much as you can,” he said.

“School helps a lot, so stick with it.”
