Key Changes to NDIS Plan Management: What It Means for You

New regulations have been introduced that impact NDIS plan management. We break down the changes.

A different approach.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced new rules that aim to enhance the clarity and fairness of NDIS plan decisions.

In other words, these changes are designed to ensure your plan best supports your needs.

We outline the new rules and how they could impact you.

Key Changes to NDIS Plan Management

The updates to NDIS plan management came into effect on 4 March 2025. Here is a summary of those changes:

1. Risk Assessment

The new regulations enable the NDIS to identify potential risks in the management of your funding. A risk becomes a concern only when appropriate supports or safeguards are lacking.

When evaluating plan management requests, the NDIA takes into account the potential for unreasonable risk to the participant.

In assessing unreasonable risk, the NDIA considers various factors, including the participant's ability to manage their plan, the potential for financial harm, and the likelihood of meeting NDIS obligations.

This approach ensures that the NDIS can provide the necessary support for effective funding management.

2. Support Before Change

If the NDIS identifies a risk, it will first try to find extra support or safeguards to help you keep control over your funding.

Its goal is to help you, not to change how your funding is managed straight away.

3. Communication

If the NDIS needs to alter the way your funding is managed, it will talk to you and explain why the change is necessary.

The NDIS wants you to understand its decisions and give you a chance to share your thoughts or ask for a review if you do not agree.

A Streamlined Process

The new regulations clarify how you can request changes to your plan. This can be done in two ways:

  • Plan variations: These are small adjustments that can be made without needing to replace your entire plan. This is useful for minor updates or changes in your support services.
  • Plan reassessments: These involve a comprehensive review that creates a new plan with a new end date, which is necessary if there are significant changes in your needs or circumstances.

These updates are designed to ensure that any changes to your plan are made fairly and consistently, so your supports align with your current needs.

What the Changes Mean for You

Here are three points to keep in mind regarding the key changes to NDIS plan management:

  • You have the right to request changes to your plan if your needs change.
  • The NDIS has stated that it will work with participants throughout the process and provide clear explanations for its decisions.
  • The NDIS policies and guidelines have been updated to reflect these new rules, with the aim of ensuring you receive the best support possible.
