Travelling with a Disability: Top Tips for Young Explorers

Planning a fun adventure? These top tips for travellers with disability can help to make your journey smoother.

Exciting. Eye-opening. Enjoyable.

These are just some of the words used to describe the experience of travelling.

The thought of embarking on a journey as a young person to somewhere new can feel exciting, but it can also create feelings of worry and fear. For young people with disability, the question of accessibility comes to mind.

With the right planning, support and confidence, young explorers can navigate new places with ease.

There are plenty of resources to help ensure a smooth journey, whether it is a short trip to another city or an international adventure. Websites like Accessible Travel Online and Travel Without Limits offer helpful guidance on accessible transport and accommodation.

But since nothing beats first-hand experience, we asked six seasoned travellers to share their top travel tips for young people with disability who are thinking about embarking on a new adventure.

Ed’s Travel Journey

Ed, an employee at our Kew Business Solutions in Melbourne, found a love for travel as a child when he would holiday with his parents.

Since 2000, he has been travelling independently, embracing public transport and even flying alone.

Ed’s first solo trip was nerve-wracking, but he quickly learned how to manage his travels efficiently.

Travel Tips from Ed:

  • Plan ahead: Always make sure you know your route and timings in advance.
  • Ask for help: When Ed flew to Broome, a kind person assisted him with his boarding pass and luggage.
  • Pack smart: Whether for daily commutes or a sports trip, Ed ensures he has packed his essentials.

Alicia’s Travel Adventures

Alicia has been an employee at our Mackay Business Solutions for nearly two years and recently enjoyed a memorable trip with her family to Brisbane.

From fireworks at the riverfront to shopping sprees, Alicia made the most of her trip.

Travel Tips from Alicia:

  • Enjoy the little moments: Whether it is a delicious drink from Starbucks or playing with a pet, make the most of your experience.
  • Plan fun activities: Shopping and visiting local attractions can make a trip even more exciting.
  • Dream big: Alicia hopes to visit Disneyland one day, and encourages others to set their own travel goals.

Anthony’s Independent Travel

Since starting at our Cairns Business Solutions in 2015, Anthony has gained confidence in travelling.

His first solo trip was volunteering for Endeavour Foundation at a Brisbane Broncos rugby league game with the assistance of his Employment Coach. Now, he is planning a long holiday in America and Canada.

Travel Tips from Anthony:

  • Research your destination: Look up places to visit and check the weather for appropriate clothing.
  • Prepare for international travel: Anthony learned to apply for an international bank card after facing extra charges in New Zealand.
  • Ensure phone connectivity: Make arrangements to use your phone overseas.
  • Stay safe: Feeling secure while travelling boosts independence and confidence.

Anthony’s (‘Gessa’) Island Travels

Anthony, otherwise known as ‘Gessa’, works at our Cairns Business Solutions, too. He loves visiting Thursday Island – it is where his mother lives – and often makes the journey alone.

Anthony also enjoys trips to Townsville and Brisbane to watch his favourite National Rugby League (NRL) team, the North Queensland Cowboys, play.

Travel Tips from Anthony:

  • Know security procedures: Being prepared for airport checks makes flying easier.
  • Pack wisely: Avoid placing restricted items in your carry-on luggage.
  • Enjoy the process: Check-in at the airport can be an enjoyable part of the travel experience.

Paul’s Travel Experiences

Paul is another Cairns Business Solutions employee, and he also lives in an Endeavour Foundation home.

He enjoys taking short trips and visiting his family in Adelaide. Sometimes, Paul’s support worker assists with packing.

Travel Tips from Paul:

  • Use support services: Asking for help at the airport makes boarding smoother.
  • Try new experiences: Exploring different destinations adds to the excitement.

Russell’s International Journeys

Russell, who we support in his home and in the community, and who has been an employee at our Cairns Business Solutions for more than 10 years, recently visited China.

With the support of his sister, his trips are planned to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Travel Tips from Russell:

  • Dress appropriately: Research the weather and pack suitable clothing.
  • Embrace new cultures: Trying local food and meeting new people enhances the travel experience.
